Root Canal Treatments (RCT)

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure performed to save and repair a tooth that is badly decayed, infected, or damaged. Instead of extracting the natural tooth, the infected pulp (soft tissue inside the root canal containing nerves and blood vessels) is removed, the canal is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a biocompatible material. This prevents reinfection and preserves the natural tooth structure.

Indications
  • Deep dental caries (cavities) reaching the pulp
  • Tooth fracture involving pulp exposure
  • Severe tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Swelling or abscess formation near the tooth root
  • Failed previous dental restorations
  • Trauma to teeth
Procedure
  • Diagnosis & X-ray: The dentist evaluates the tooth with clinical examination and radiographs.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area.
  • Access Opening: A small opening is made in the tooth crown to reach the pulp chamber.
  • Pulp Removal: The infected or dead pulp tissue is removed.
  • Cleaning & Shaping: The root canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped with specialized instruments.
  • Filling (Obturation): The cleaned canals are sealed with a material called gutta-percha to prevent reinfection.
  • Restoration: Finally, a crown or filling is placed on the tooth to restore strength, function, and aesthetics.
Benefits
  • Saves the natural tooth
  • Relieves severe pain and infection
  • Restores normal chewing and biting
  • Prevents spread of infection to surrounding tissues
  • Maintains natural smile and alignment
Risks / Possible Complications
  • Pain or sensitivity for a few days after treatment
  • Possibility of reinfection if not properly sealed
  • Tooth may become brittle over time without a crown
  • Rare risk of instrument fracture inside the canal
