Dental cleaning and polishing, commonly known as scaling and polishing, is a preventive dental procedure that removes plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth surfaces and beneath the gumline. It helps maintain healthy gums, prevents gum disease, and improves overall oral hygiene.

Procedure

• Examination – Dentist checks teeth and gums for plaque deposits and signs of gum disease.
• Scaling – Special ultrasonic or hand instruments are used to remove hardened tartar and plaque from above and below the gumline.
• Polishing – Teeth are polished using a rotating brush and prophylaxis paste to smoothen the surfaces and remove stains.
• Fluoride Application (optional) – Sometimes fluoride gel/varnish is applied to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.
